THE LOWDOWN: Cumbria and Lancashire Community Rehabilitation Company (which provides probation services) asked me to re-write a suite of seven leaflets aimed at offenders. Information in the existing leaflets was a little jumbled. The copy didn't flow very well and it was written in an unfriendly tone. I set about transforming the content, making it logical, clear, informative and more interesting to read. Use of plain English, positive language, bullet points and clear subheads made the copy more appealing to readers. I suggested getting some feedback from ex offenders before we went to print. This proved to be worthwhile and a couple of changes were made as a result of their input. Staff welcomed the improved leaflets and they are now being used by other Community Rehabilitation Companies around the country. Here are some sample pages.
